Next generation solutions from euromicron at CeBIT: SSM euromicron makes control center system of Dow Olefinverbund GmbH future-proof

euromicron is presenting its extensive know-how in the field of network infrastructures for the needs of today and tomorrow at this year’s CeBIT under the slogan “next generation solutions”.
In the field of Security solutions, euromicron is presenting its competence with reference to integrated security control centers for controlling alerting and building technology. One recent reference project here is the renewal of the security system at Dow Olefinverbund GmbH by SSM euromicron in Schkopau.

Security is writ large at SSM euromicron

The security of employees, customers and the neighborhood, as well as safe operation of its production sites, has top priority for Dow.
In addition to the underlying control center system, the experts from SSM euromicron renewed the networked fire and burglar alarm, video surveillance and electro-acoustic systems for the company in Central Germany and so created an ideal security solution for it for the foreseeable future. The integrated alarm management system acts as the central point of control and administration for the alerting and security systems. “By integrating the main security systems and gradually establishing and expanding the solution concept in a modular structure, we’ve created a solution tailored specifically to our customer and are on hand to provide it with assistance as the central point of contact for all security-related matters,” is how Andreas Büttner, Managing Director of SSM euromicron GmbH, outlines the solution for Dow.

One system – one solution – one point of contact

Following detailed analysis and consulting, the WINMAG system from Esser, which enables customized extensions quickly and easily, was chosen for Dow. This management system can be used to provide not only alerting systems, but also functions for building control technology, process engineering (measurement and control) and data management and to use them in a uniform manner. Functional mapping of alerting, notification and escalation scenarios is a firm part of the management system, as is user-, time-, event- or program-controlled interaction across all utilities between all the connected subsystems.
The simple and easy-to-use system can be operated and controlled by a single person and enables prompt identification of danger or false alarms and so rapid alerting.
“The flexibility and modularity of Esser’s solution also has the advantage that we were able to migrate the system gently and expand it to include customized system solutions,” explains Büttner. Apart from optimal security at the plant, the customer can also rest assured that its security system is highly available. It almost goes without saying that automatic and consistent documentation of all data is a further advantage for the customer in this “next generation solution” from euromicron.
It is therefore no surprise that the customer’s response to SSM euromicron’s services is a positive one: “Thanks to the new control center system, we have cutting-edge, efficient alarm management for incidents and disasters,” says Ingolf Mross, Head of Emergency Services & Security at Dow’s location in Central Germany.

SSM euromicron – the specialist for chemical plants

With its specialization on chemical plants, SSM euromicron GmbH is a proven expert when it comes to developing and implementing security concepts in this most demanding and exacting of fields. There is hardly any other area where it is so important to ensure the safety and health of employees and the intactness and integrity of means of production and data. In this respect, the systems of SSM euromicron are even suitable for potentially explosive business establishments.

Reducing interfaces as a risk factor

The security systems in many businesses have evolved with the company and grown in size, lack of transparency and complexity. “We often encounter different systems at potential customers, each of which is run for separate areas. It’s not rarely the case that products from different manufacturers are installed and maintained by different service providers,” says Büttner. These interfaces in the security system are always an added risk and so have to be eliminated as far as possible. His conclusion: “Without a control center system that can be used to manage all security matters and can detect and report danger, an optimal assessment and response to a potential incident is impossible.” The biggest challenge is to ensure maximum protection for people and material assets. However, a risk management system must also be able to limit any damage that may arise and do so with minimum resources.
