New stadium in Halle: SSM euromicron demonstrates communications and security expertise in sports arena construction

As part of construction of the new ERDGAS Sport Park in Halle, SSM euromicron planned all the communications and security components and systems and implemented them on time and budget.

The city of Halle has erected the ERDGAS Sport Park on the grounds of the former Kurt Wabbel Stadium in just one year. At the cost of around 17 million euros, a modern stadium was created which integrates the listed exterior walls of the old stadium, which was built in 1936, and holds 15,000 spectators, 6,000 of them seated. The three-story main building accommodates not only the players’ area, but also VIP boxes, the press center and the administrative office of the soccer club Hallescher Fußballclub (HFC).

SSM euromicron GmbH, a wholly owned subsidiary of euromicron AG, submitted a persuasive offer for the tendered communications and security solutions and has established itself as a reliable solution provider in construction of sports arenas by completing its work on time and budget. The customer’s satisfaction with SSM euromicron’s performance is demonstrated by the maintenance agreements concluded after the order with the responsible operating company.

In addition to its technical expertise in all fields of communications and security technology, SSM euromicron impressed as an all-round provider of the requested crafts and with the manpower to match. As a subsidiary of the euromicron Group, which is listed on the stock market, SSM euromicron also has the financial strength required to enable up-front funding of such cost-intensive projects without any problems. SSM euromicron also contributed the required expertise in stadium public address systems, with the result that it was able to meet all deadlines and technical stipulations in a construction period of just six months using cutting-edge technology and taking into account the guidelines of the German Soccer Association (DFB).

Forward-looking network infrastructure as the basis of the all-round solution

More than 20 km of data cable, around 10 km of loudspeaker cable, some 5 km of fire alarm cable, more than 15 km of installation cable, 1.5 km of coaxial cable and over 12 km of fiber-optic cable were used in the complete complex. They were laid in accordance with the German Conduit System Guidelines (LAR) in cable ducts, in the stadium’s roof construction, in the ground and along the listed exterior wall of the former Kurt Wabbel Stadium.
SSM euromicron’s overall solution for the communications and security solution also included setting up a comprehensive data network, consisting of passive Cat-7 cabling with fiber-optic connections and WLAN solutions. An extensive network for PC users and the box office area was implemented for the entire active data technology, beginning with the specifications based on Cisco components and Dell servers. The overall result was a future-proof network infrastructure that was used as the platform for the communications and security applications.

Sound insulation and security guaranteed

Planning and implementation of the public address and voice alarm systems was preceded by a noise protection study. Since the stadium is located in a residential area, the city of Halle had imposed strict requirements. Moreover, the media guidelines and specifications of the German Soccer Association DFB in relation to the noise level had to be complied with precisely. “Then there was the fact that both systems had to correspond directly with each other, since the voice alarm system was to pass on the manual and automatic alerts from the fire alarm system in the defined areas of the stadium,” explains the responsible SSM euromicron Project Manager. “Cutting-edge fire alarm technology based on FlexES and intelligent alerting technology were used. The voice alarm system Variodyn D1, which is approved in compliance with EN54-16 in accordance with DIN VDE 0833/4, was also installed.”

As regards technical implementation of the public address system, the right noise level had to be able to be provided for each area – the function rooms, the VIP boxes, the press center and the spectators’ area, including the pitch. To enable that, 28 high-performance speakers were installed in the spectators’ area and aligned in accordance with the required sound distribution and taking into account the noise emission limits for local residents. So as to display video images to monitor the spectators’ area and stadium perimeter, a total of 9 IP cameras connected to the network infrastructure via fiber-optic cabling were used in direct cooperation with the police.
