Industrial switches and multimode extenders guarantee smooth data transmission
Having been successfully tested at the last World Cup, the goal line technology GoalControl has also been in use in France’s first division since the beginning of this season. As in Brazil, smooth transfer of the images from the goal cameras is ensured by a multimode fiber-optic network based on industrial switches and Gigabit multimode extenders from euromicron’s subsidiary Microsens.
euromicron’s subsidiary Microsens is once again providing support for use of the goal line technology GoalControl. The technology, which was licensed by FIFA in 2013, captures the position of the ball with the aid of cameras and informs the referee as soon as the ball has fully crossed the goal line. After being successfully tested at the last World Cup, GoalControl has also been in use in France’s top-flight division (Ligue 1) since the beginning of the 2015/2016 season. As in Brazil, smooth transfer of the more than 500 images a second from the cameras is ensured by a multimode fiber-optic network based on industrial switches and Gigabit multimode extenders from Microsens. This network transports the image data to the central processing unit of the GoalControl system, which analyzes the data and, if necessary, sends a radio signal to the referee.

Two key challenges are overcome with the aid of Microsens’ network components: Since the GoalControl cameras are placed under the roof and on the catwalk of a stadium, the multimode signals must be transported over fiber-optic links of several hundred meters in length. In addition, the switches are sometimes exposed to extreme weather conditions. Microsens’ industrial switches are specifically designed to cope with such requirements. They withstand temperatures ranging from minus 40 to plus 70 degrees Celsius and humidity between 5 and 90 percent and so ensure uninterrupted data transfer even in continuous rain, heat and frost. The Gigabit multimode extenders from Microsens guarantee the necessary range for signal transmission. Whereas the range for multimode signals is usually limited to a maximum of 550 meters (50/125 μm fibers) or 275 meters (62.5/125 μm fibers), it is extended to up to two kilometers thanks to Microsens’ components.
Dirk Broichhausen, Managing Director of GoalControl GmbH, is highly satisfied about this performance data: “Our technology is based on fast and reliable transmission of all data. Microsens supplies us with highly available components that have already proven their ability in Brazil. We’re delighted that we’re again backed by a reliable partner in the shape of Microsens in Ligue 1.”
