The energy service provider Überlandwerk Rhön GmbH (ÜWR) has decided to roll out the network management solution Privus Manager® from telent GmbH, a euromicron Group company. Privus Manager® gives ÜWR a complete, always up-to-date view of the communications network and quick and easy access to network resources if and when required. Privus Manager® has been specially designed for consistent controlling and end-to-end monitoring of heterogeneous networks and is based on the product NovaTEN from the development partner MicroNova.
Around 100,000 inhabitants in the triangle between the federal states of Bavaria, Hesse and Thuringia put their trust in the energy services provided by Überlandwerk Rhön GmbH (ÜWR). The company has a heterogeneous communications network. This has a historically evolved structure, with radio relay, fiber-optic and copper-based technologies from different vendors. These heterogeneous networks are monitored using the network management system (NMS) Privus Manager®. “telent GmbH has many years of experience in system integration of tried-and-tested, state-of-the-art technologies,” says Manfred Kaiser, Head of the Medium-Voltage Network Operation department at ÜWR. “Privus Manager® is an extensive, diverse network management platform that gives us flexible and end-to-end NMS functionalities, is highly future-proof and also protects our investments.”
End-to-end NMS: Privus Manager®
Thanks to its open architecture, Privus Manager® can be adapted flexibly to the network scenarios at hand. For example, telent GmbH has integrated the existing NMS for a PDH subnetwork of ÜWR in the overarching Privus Manager® and combined it under one interface. As an end-to-end NMS, Privus Manager® now monitors all communications networks of Überlandwerk Rhön GmbH – regardless of the technologies used. Apart from visualization of these networks and their elements with flexible presentations of their topology, Privus Manager® simplifies and automates the power utility’s operating processes. If required, additional capacities and network resources can be centrally planned and provided so that the around 3,000 kilometer of networks can be operated and managed at all times. The system has a redundant design so as to ensure this function permanently.
In addition, network-wide alert monitoring and filtering enables rapid reporting of transmission problems. Up to now, faults were only detected once a service had failed, which resulted in costly and laborious searching for the problem and long rectification times. In especially critical cases, Privus Manager® forwards the alerts to the control center, so that alternative routes for voice and data traffic can be used, added or switched off. “With our professional NMS, we help operators who demand the very highest requirements and availability from their networks. Key aspects in this are rapid and efficient troubleshooting and secure transmission of application-critical data, even in the event of a problem,” says Robert Blum, Managing Director of telent GmbH.
