“Industry 4.0 to touch and feel”: euromicron’s subsidiary ELABO presents model factory

Smart factory demonstrates the possibilities of networked production

euromicron’s subsidiary ELABO is showcasing the possibilities of networked industrial production in a model factor in Crailsheim, Baden-Württemberg. Apart from the way in which networked workplace systems function, visitors can also see how security measures are implemented, among other things.

As a provider of innovative solutions for network infrastructure in the “Internet of Things” arena, euromicron is also tackling the challenge of Industry 4.0. One particular focus is on leveraging potentials for optimization and synergies from networked production for small and medium-sized enterprises. Anyone interested can take a good look at how such a medium-sized smart factory works in Crailsheim, where euromicron’s subsidiary ELABO has set up a model factory demonstrating how production processes are networked in exemplary fashion. For instance, visitors can learn more about the functioning of a networked workplace system consisting of subsystems for research and development, production, quality assurance and repair and maintenance.

The heart of this system is the data management software EDM 4.0, which stores all the production-related data centrally in an SQL database and provides it to the departments in real time. If, for example, the development department changes the parameters for measurement and testing equipment or corrects design data, the information and specifications are available instantaneously at all assembly and final inspection units. That ensures consistency and comparability of measurements throughout the process chain. In turn, developers can access centrally archived production data and information on returns, as well as include statistics on faults and repairs in their work. Moreover, the software also enables data to be exchanged with ERP systems.

Apart from networking of subprocesses in industrial production, visitors to the smart factory are also shown how integrated security measures are integrated, such as through linking of access control and the workplace system: If technicians have not authenticated themselves using their ID card, they cannot start up the system. All the installed security and workplace systems are based on cutting-edge network infrastructure components that have been provided by various euromicron subsidiaries. They include high-quality cabling solutions from Sachsenkabel and ruggedized industrial switches from Microsens.

The model factory in Crailsheim has been visited frequently by representatives from prestigious companies and institutions and has met with a positive response across the board. An information day on the subjects of “Industry 4.0 and Logistics 4.0”, which ELABO recently staged in cooperation with Würth Industrie Service GmbH & Co. KG, also met with keen interest. “The event precisely reflected the spirit of the times,” summed up Timo Henkelmann, Head of Regional Key Account Management at Würth Industrie Service. “It offered an excellent platform to share notes and experience with companies from similar sectors. It made clear what impact increasing digitization is having in industry on the supply of resources up to the workplace and how logistics and industry are becoming further intermeshed. Many practical examples and an accompanying exhibition were a fine complement to theory: Industry 4.0 to touch and feel.”
