The system integrator and technology service provider telent GmbH took part in the large, Europe-wide invitation to tender for transmission technology for operational applications and was awarded the contract. The framework agreement with DB Netz AG comprises several lots involving the supply, installation and commissioning of various system components used for narrow-band applications and broadband connections alike. DB Netz AG is the rail infrastructure company of Deutsche Bahn AG and is responsible for operation, maintenance and further development of Europe’s largest rail network. That includes enhancing the infrastructure through investments in the existing telecommunications network and in state-of-the-art control, safety and security technology.
High-quality, highly available solutions
System technology for the local network level
In cooperation with its partner KEYMILE, telent is supplying the PDH systems of the XMP1 series, which have already been rolled out successfully at DB Netz AG. They are needed to activate telecommunication systems for electronic interlockings and provide a large number of rail-specific interfaces. telent continues to trust in UMUX, a multi-service access system that has been used at DB Netz AG for years, for networking the GSM-R switching systems. A new element in the system agreement is the IP-based add-on and transmission platform XMC20. Specifically in the data arena, it has extensive functions and is particularly suitable as a new PDH and Ethernet platform, including for future IP-based applications.
System technology for the regional network level
The newly introduced SDH transmission systems SPO1410 and SPO1460 from telent’s partner ERICSSON are outstanding for creating transmission networks with high-bitrate services, such as in the IKI project. Apart from the classic SDH kernel, they have a high-performance packet switch with MPLS-TP functionality based on the latest standard. That means they can provide a wide range of data traffic with maximum availability.
Network management systems for the transmission systems
The PDH and SDH transmission systems are connected to existing network management systems. The two legacy systems Service on Access and UNEM permit Germany-wide monitoring of all installed network elements and operation of them. The operating staff of DB Netz AG thus has an effective tool for switching new connection routes throughout the network quickly and easily by remote access, making changes to the installed base and carrying out maintenance measures speedily. These state-of-the-art network management systems create the ideal conditions for secure and cost-efficient operation of DB Netz AG’s nationwide network. “Our objective is to give our customers reliable, yet future-proof technologies for their operational applications. We achieve that through long-standing partnerships with well-known vendors,” states Robert Blum, Managing Director of telent GmbH. “We’re proud that we’ve again been able to win over DB Netz AG with our know-how and the quality of our solutions and services and look forward to continuing our productive working relationship.”
